IRAQ STUDY GROUP
Conception, Launch, Release & a Leading Figure

Suspense leading up to the release of the Iraq Study Group’s report has been mitigated by press leaks. Nonetheless, this bi-partisan panel of distinguished Americans had an interesting precursor that shows that one individual’s actions can matter.

Conception
Republican Frank Wolf (R-VA) set the whole thing in motion (see Christian Science Monitor, 11/28/2006). He had previously visited Iraq. However, it was his visit in September, 2005 which tremendously shocked him. With horror, he observed men with deadly weapons walking through a maternity ward in Baghdad. From that moment, he started his personal crusade: the creation of a group to study the Iraq problem, consisting of truly civic-minded Americans from both political parties.

A few astrological signatures of this story are especially fascinating.

First, Wolf took that 2005 trip to Baghdad while TRANSITING PLUTO was at 21 degrees SAGITTARIUS. That degree forms at T-SQUARE (dynamic and challenging aspect) to the MARS-NEPTUNE “war” signature in the U.S. chart.

Launch of Group
The actual launch of the Iraq Study Group occurred on March 15, 2006. On that day, the MOON was in the diplomatic, partnership and strategizing sign of LIBRA. Indeed, the panel had 5 Republicans and 5 Democrats, and had 2 leaders -- a Republican, former Secretary of Treasury James Baker, and a Democrat, greatly admired former Representative Lee Hamilton (born 4/20/31 -- chart not yet posted).

That day there was a SUN-PLUTO SQUARE, indicating intense struggle over a huge international power issue.

The closest ASPECT, only 2 minutes away from exact, was a SQUARE (challenge) between JUPITER in SCORPIO and NEPTUNE in AQUARIUS. That JUPITER-SATURN does show a potential for inflated optimism. However, it also describes a struggle to meld the extreme power orientation of JUPITER in SCORPIO with the delusional but idealistic NEPTUNE in the sign of the common good, AQUARIUS.

Historical note: that JUPITER-SATURN SQUARE also makes a fascinating exact T-SQUARE to the FIXED CROSS TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE of August, 1999. The path of that ECLIPSE cast a terrifying shadow, originating in Western Europe and sweeping across to the Middle East. This ECLIPSE foreshadowed so many horrors which have since unfolded.

In fact, of the charts which connect to terrorist events, many have close connections to degrees in that 1999 Eclipse chart. One example is the first Inaugural chart of George W. Bush -- it indicates an attack on the U.S. President and/or inside the United States. For another example, see the charts of Saddam Hussein and the day when Saddam took power.

Report's Release
The Iraq Report is being formerly released tomorrow on December 6th. Below are a few astrological descriptors.

The NODAL AXIS, now at 21 degrees VIRGO-PISCES, connects back in a tension SQUARE to the PLUTO at 21 SAGITTARIUS of Wolf’s 2005 trip to Baghdad. NODAL contacts between charts represent very fated connections -- either in relationships or to events. This transiting S. NODE, descriptive of something coming from the past, now conjoins the NEPTUNE of the U.S. (delusion and confusion or idealism and inspiration).

The MOON on December 6, in the sign of CANCER, ties with all the U.S. planets in CANCER (like the U.S. SUN, VENUS, JUPITER and MERCURY.) Also, George W. Bush and the U.S. both have a SUN SIGN CANCER (almost at the same degree.) This Iraq report emotionally “matters” to both the country and the President.

One Leading Figure: Baker as Catalyst
James Baker is deeply grounded in reality. He is a SUN SIGN TAURUS: both practical and pragmatic. It is critical to note that Baker’s ASCENDANT is almost identical to the U.S. ASCENDANT. And, most importantly, his ASCENDANT conjoins the U.S. URANUS at 8 degrees GEMINI. URANUS contacts bring lightning quick connections and sometimes drastic breakthrough changes.

Baker was a controversial figure when this President Bush triumphed over Al Gore, and, throughout his public career, has been a catalyst for change. Republicans hope that he will save the legacy of George W. Bush.

I think he is still a man to watch for his influence in the 2008 elections.

* Note for astrology groupies' discussion: Baker's NATAL MC conjoins U.S. GEM ASC MOON, while his PROGRESSED MOON now conjoins the U.S. SAG ASC MOON.
